An update on your Student Priorities

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Student Priorities process. Through voting, comments and conversations, you told us what matters most to you, and that input is now shaping what happens next.

Your Union Leadership group, made up of elected Students’ Union Reps and School Reps, has now agreed the next stage of this work, and we want to be clear with you about the outcomes and how you can get involved.

Your priority areas and what happens next

All the priorities will move forward into this next phase of work. The focus now is on bringing students together to share experiences, learn from each other, and build a clearer picture of the issues before deciding what ‘action’ should look like.

The vote has helped identify three key priorities that will be the main focus for the next stage, with two other priorities also moving forward alongside them. We’ll be supporting these areas in slightly different ways, with student-involvement being central to everything.

Key priorities

These priorities received the most votes and will `have more resources behind them, including staff time, to help turn ideas into action:

  • Finance (Cost of Living and Studying)
  • Timetabling
  • Placements

Additional priorities

These priorities will also move forward alongside the others, with progress driven more directly by student-led action:

  • Facilities
  • Teaching

What about Accessibility?

There’s one thing we want to be really clear about. We included Accessibility in the Priorities vote, and that was a mistake.

Accessibility is a human right and should never be decided by a vote. Your feedback and comments made this clear, and you were right to challenge us.

While work in this area is continuing through Community Organising, including planned House Meetings, we don’t want to give the impression that this is the only Accessibility work we do.

Accessibility is part of how we run the Students’ Union. It’s built into everything we do, from campaigns and priorities to everyday decision making.

We are active in the Disabled Students’ Action Group and work closely with the University on its Access and Participation Plan, challenging barriers and driving real change as part of our everyday work.

And while we’re proud of the work we do in this area, we know there’s always more we can do, and we’ll keep listening to you as we do that.

Missed the vote but still want to get involved?

You can still have your say. House Meetings are open to any student who wants to get involved, whether you voted or not. They’re an opportunity to build a shared understanding of each issue by listening to the experiences, motivations and concerns of everyone in the room. This will ensure that any campaign we create reflects what genuinely matters to the people affected.

What happens next

From this work, student-led campaign teams will form to plan and push for change across each priority.

This will feed into our next Student Assembly in April, where University decision makers will be asked to respond to these priorities and set out what changes they can deliver and how soon.

Thank you

Thanks again for taking the time to vote, share your views and get involved. Your experiences and ideas are helping shape what happens next.

We’d really love to see you at a House Meeting and hope you can continue to be part of our Community Organising journey.
