Watch out Hollywood, the real awards season is about to hit with the 17th Annual Golden Roses Awards.

Each year, we invite students to nominate and celebrate the hard work of both staff and fellow students.

The Golden Roses nominations are OPEN NOW and close at 9am on Tuesday 21st April.

Staff Awards

Lecturer of the Year

This award is for a Lecturer that has made a significant contribution to the academic experience. Do they use innovative teaching methods? Do they adapt their teaching style to students' needs? Is your lecturer passionate about their subject? Are they genuinely excited to teach and engage you? Do they enthuse you with their knowledge and readily acknowledge your input?

Supporting the Student Experience

This award recognises the contribution to the student experience from those people who work behind the scenes. A positive learning experience relies on constant support provided to students on a day-to-day basis from a range of university staff. Whether this is a department administrator, a team of support staff, a technician, a cleaner, a group of campus security or anyone who has had a significant impact on the student experience, but who would ordinarily go unnoticed. This is an award for non-teaching staff and is open to both individual staff members and teams.

Course Team of the Year

This award recognises the University of Lancashire Course Team that has made a significant positive contribution to the academic experience, by working together to provide a consistent experience throughout all levels of the course, as well as working with students as participants and active learners. Does your course operate excellent assessment and feedback practices? Is it well organised and managed with clear and consistent communication? Do they utilise innovative and engaging teaching methods?

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award

This award recognises a member of staff that firmly considers students' needs and takes the necessary steps to allow all students to maximise their experiences. Does this lecturer take a flexible approach to teaching that is inclusive and diverse, engaging in a curriculum that is representative of all communities? For example, do they promote authors and researchers from a diverse background? Does this staff member fully consider the reasonable adjustments of students and try to utilise different and accessible ways of assessment?

University Service of the Year

This award is for the University Service that has made a significant positive contribution to the student experience. Whether it was a visit to a Hub, having a bite to eat, studying in the library or seeking help from one of the numerous support services available. The winner of this award will have maintained service delivery by showing through continuous enhancement or new innovative activities that clearly have student needs in mind. This is an award for non-teaching staff.

Academic Support Award

This award recognises a member of staff that goes above and beyond to promote a fantastic student experience. They will support students with their personal and professional development, including skills in self-awareness, reflection and action planning. Are they approachable, accessible, and proactive in offering academic support to students by recognising them as individuals? Do they support international students through their first steps in UK Higher Education? Do they appropriately signpost students to the relevant services? This award is for teaching staff, including Personal Tutors and Achievement Coaches.

Outstanding Assessment and Feedback

This award recognises that assessment and feedback are an essential part of the learning experience. Good assessment is innovative, challenging, and tied to real-world experiences and practices. Good feedback is not just a grade - it explains what you have done well and what you need to improve next time. Did one of your modules have particularly valuable, thought-provoking and diverse assessment methods? Was your feedback personalised to you? Was it clear, consistent, timely and did it help you achieve a better grade in your next assignment?

Postgraduate Support Award

This award recognises a staff member that has made a significant contribution to either the academic or student experience of postgraduate students, whether through assessment and feedback practices, innovative teaching methods, or by responding to students' experiences and needs through supportive supervision. This award is for any staff member (or student) that supervises, supports and/or teaches postgraduate students.

Excellence in Employability Award

This award recognises a member of staff who takes a particular focus on using real life examples in their teaching, helping students develop as professionals and preparing them for their future careers. Has your lecturer provided opportunities for you to experience a professional environment and enhanced your employability? Have they made connections between their teaching and career pathways in the type of assessments you completed, creating practical elements for you to improve upon key skills?

Student Voice Award

This award recognises a staff member who has made an outstanding impact on the student experience and positively contributes to the experience of those around them. Do they actively seek student feedback to shape the course/module/teaching practice? Are they engaging with Student Voice mechanisms and providing feedback on your ideas? Do they promote Course Rep opportunities and speaking with your representatives?

Burnley Beacon

The Burnley Beacon award recognises a staff member who plays a vital role in shaping an excellent student experience on the Burnley campus. It celebrates someone whose dedication, guidance and everyday actions help students feel supported, confident and connected. This award is for a staff member who champions Burnley students in everything they do, and have made a huge contribution to student lives in Burnley. This award is open to any staff member who supports and enhances the student experience at the Burnley campus.

Westlakes Wonder

This award celebrates a staff member who makes an outstanding contribution to the student experience on our Westlakes campus. It recognises someone who goes above and beyond to support students, create a welcoming environment, and help the campus community thrive. Do you know a staff member who consistently supports and champions Westlakes students? Makes a positive impact on students' academic, personal or social experience? Always goes the extra mile to ensure students feel supported and valued? This award is open to any staff member based at our Westlakes campus.

School of the Year

The total nominations for each school are evaluated and interpreted to show which school has the best provision for its students.

Student Awards

School Rep of the Year

This award recognises the School Rep which has been consistently active over the year, voicing the opinions of all students within their school by regularly meeting with senior staff, union reps and their wider academic community. They will and have responded to feedback when arisen by demonstrating good organisation and communication skills as well as effectively closing the feedback loop. They are an ambassador of the Union at school's level and vice versa. This award is for any School Rep who is currently elected by University of Lancashire SU.

Society of the Year (Academic)

This award is for a society which has successfully and enthusiastically operated outside their course to bring together students who are all passionate about the same subject. Is the society passionate about their subject alongside their studies? Does it enhance the learning experience of those on a particular course? Does it provide opportunities for networking and socialising outside of the classroom? This award is for any Academic Society that is currently affiliated and supported by University of Lancashire SU.

Society of the Year (Non-Academic)

This award celebrates a non academic society that has created an outstanding community built around shared interests, hobbies, culture, or beliefs. It recognises a society that welcomes students from all backgrounds and helps them connect, have fun, and feel part of something special. If you know a society that brings students together, creates inclusive and enjoyable opportunities to get involved, builds a strong sense of belonging and makes a positive impact on the wider University community - this is the award for them!

SU Student Staff Member of the Year

This award celebrates a student staff member at the SU who embodies all of our organisation values. This could be someone working in Lampworks, serving you in the cafe, working with communities or helping your queries about student groups. This person brings positivity, reliability and genuine care to their role. They Stay Human, offering support with warmth and compassion, and they Do What They Say They Will, consistently delivering a great experience for others. They show Curiosity Not Judgement, welcoming new ideas and valuing diverse perspectives. They Prioritise Joy, helping to make the SU a fun, inclusive space, and they Act with Courage, speaking up and making a difference when it matters.
