A Small Guide to Student Work A Small Guide to Student Work

Finding a student job not only helps support you financially but also builds up your CV, which is crucial when you’re starting to look at building your career. An impressive and built-up CV will help you shine out amongst over applicants looking for graduate level jobs.

A few tips to balance university and work

  • Don't work too many hours

Technically, you could work any number of hours you like while you're studying, but some universities actively discourage part-time work during term-time. Think carefully about how many hours a week you can commit to. 10 hours is enough for most people, while others can manage 15 or more.

  • Be organised

As a student, you'll know when your seminars and lectures are, so it's best to share this timetable with your employer so that you're not asked to work during uni time. You should also have all your important exam dates noted in your diary or on your phone - be organised and make your employer aware of these as soon as possible.

  • Look for flexible hours

If you're employed in the hospitality industry in a bar, café or restaurant, you'll usually be offered flexible hours (a zero-hours contract). This can be really useful at exam time or if you have some tricky deadlines. The downside is you'll still have to prove you're flexible, and you might not get enough hours to make it worthwhile because work is never guaranteed.

  • Put your health first

Some students find it really tough to fit in study around part-time work and their stress levels rise. If working at the same time as studying starts to affect your mental health or your grades, cut back on your hours or ditch the job completely.

Here at the Students’ Union, we also offer student jobs across all different areas of the union, there’s bound to be something you’re interested in.
