The Students’ Union Representatives recently welcomed councillor Gabie Lowe, leader of the Green Party group for Preston City Council and councillor for Plungington, to the SU.

This was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen links between students and local decision makers. The SU Reps aim to engage more with local political representatives to ensure students’ experiences are considered in local policy discussions.

Leaders of all political groups within Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council have been invited to meet with the SU Reps, with plans to invite local councillors to the other campuses during future visits.

During her visit, councillor Lowe was given a tour of the SU, including the Essentials Hub, which gives students access to cheaper food and other essential products whilst reducing food wastage.

She also met members of the Advice Team and learned more about our services available to students throughout their studies.

Discussions during her visit focused on the challenges facing students today and the diverse nature of the University’s student community. The Rep’s highlighted how many students face different barriers alongside their studies, including work, caring responsibilities, and financial pressures.

As a distance learning postgraduate student herself, councillor Lowe was particularly interested in hearing about the support available to students and discussing how those services help students succeed.

Building relationships with local politicians is an important priority for the SU Reps, who recognise that many of the issues affecting students, such as housing and transport, are shaped by local decision making.

By establishing strong connections between local politicians and the SU, the Reps hope to create opportunities for meaningful and constructive conversations on issues that impact students in the future.
