Semester 1 Update from Chak
-
Amplifying student voice in the university
-
I’ve been representing you, the students at the University’s Board of Governors meetings and have had various meetings with university staff on issues ranging from EDI to widening participation. Whilst these conversations must stay confidential, I am ensuring the student body, and your views are at the heart of decision making withing the university.
-
Supporting our student communities
-
I attended many get-togethers this semester, listening to our students from different communities (International students, black students, LGBTQ+ community). We had conversations surrounding commuting and how this impacts your student experience, along with the issue of racism and xenophobia at university. I took note of these conversations and relayed the information onto our insight channels which then helps our staff understand the priorities of students, your experiences and helps us respond where and how it matters most.
-
I Advocated for intersectional voices in community organising, such as a safe space for the Black and Asian Queer community – the event was held in December, where I was able to sit and talk about the experiences of these students and better understand where I can further support them.
-
Standing up for you in the national student movement
-
I Represented University of Lancashire students in the NUS (National Union of Students) England conference (in Coventry, late November), and made argument against policies in the White Paper and for a more equitable Higher Education funding model
-
I supported the NUS solidarity march for migrants and international students in late November, challenging the racism and xenophobia across the country and in higher education
-
I began working with officers from other SUs on a range of national issues from migrant students' rights to duty of care. Together we marched for migrant rights and sent a letter to our local MP about a duty of care to students.
