Our thoughts are with all affected at this difficult time.
All of us at the Students’ Union are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students, Carla-Maria Georgescu. We are holding her loved ones, friends, and all who knew her in our thoughts at this very difficult time.
It has been confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Hartlepool, who is not connected to the University but known to the deceased, has been arrested and is currently in custody. Lancashire Constabulary is not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.
We know this news will have a significant impact across our university community; we would like to join the University in providing reassurance that the safety and wellbeing of students and staff remain a high priority.
The University ia working closely with the police to support the investigation, and we encourage students to avoid speculation and social media commentary, to enable the police to carry out their work effectively and without disruption.
While we know incidents like this can raise safety and wellbeing concerns, this is an isolated incident with both the University and police have provided reassurance there is no need for general safety concerns during this time.
If you have any concerns or information, you can speak to a police officer or contact Lancashire Constabulary on 101, quoting log 0560 of February 5th.
Remembering Carla-Maria
There will be a vigil to give the university community a quiet space to come together, reflect, and pay their respects.
- Date: Tuesday 10th February
- When: 5pm
- Where: St. Peter’s Square, Preston Campus (between the Students’ Union and the Library)
If you wish, you are welcome to bring flowers, artwork, or any personal items that feel meaningful as we come together to remember Carla‑Maria.
There will also be a book of condolences at the Students’ Union Welcome Point for staff and students to leave messages of respect.
We will remember Carla-Maria and offer our heartfelt sympathy to everyone impacted by this loss.
We’ll update you as soon as possible if the vigil’s time or location needs to change, as final planning is underway and weather conditions may play a part.
A MuchLoved page has also been set up so people can come together to remember Carla-Maria. Please feel free to leave a message, light a candle, or share a memory if you wish.
