Support for students affected by global conflict Support for students affected by global conflict

We know that global events can be deeply upsetting, whether you’re personally connected to a crisis or feeling the impact of constant news coverage and social media updates.

You might be worried about family and friends or simply feeling overwhelmed and it’s completely understandable to feel this way.

As your Students’ Union, our priority is making sure you feel supported, listened to, and able to access the help you need during difficult times.

Below you’ll find a range of useful information and services for anyone feeling affected by recent international events.

Wellbeing Support

Find out how to access the University’s Student Support services in the 'Support' section of the Hub.

Support includes access to a 24/7 helpline, find details here on the Student Hub, as well as a Wellbeing Drop-In on the Preston campus.

For mental health, counselling and wellbeing support, you can also email wellbeing@lancashire.ac.uk or phone 01772 893020. Both email and phone are monitored as follows:

  • Monday to Thursday, 8am to 5pm

  • Friday 9am - 4pm.

If you need urgent mental health support, please visit the help in an emergency page.

Academic and placement support

If you have been affected by the recent incident, there is academic support available to you. It is important to let your course tutor know if there are circumstances that may affect your ability to perform in your assessments and exams, or you are concerned about attending placements.

If you have been directly or indirectly impacted by these events then you may consider applying for Mitigating Circumstances to support you with assessment deadlines. If impacted by these events, you do not need to provide additional evidence to support your application at this time but should state the reasons why you are applying.

The Students’ Union Advice Service provides free, independent and confidential advice on a range of areas, including Mitigating Circumstances. You can find out more about the process, and how to contact the service on our website.

Reporting discrimination, abuse or harassment

The Students’ Union maintains a zerotolerance approach to any form of discrimination, hate, or harassment and we are a third-party hate crime reporting centre.

Incidents of discrimination or harassment can also be reported to the University via Report and Support.

Both ways of reporting can be done either directly or anonymously.

In an emergency, or to report a crime, you should always call 999.

The Security Team can also be contacted 24/7 by calling 01772 892068, emailing security@lancashire.ac.uk or by going through the SafeZone app.

Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre and spaces

The Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre at the Preston Campus offers an unconditional welcome to those of all faiths, or none. There is also an Oasis Reflection Space at the Burnley and Westlakes campuses.

The chaplains and faith representatives, whatever their faith or spirituality, are there to provide pastoral, spiritual and wellbeing support to students. They will listen with empathy and our Oasis Centre and hubs offers a space to reflect, explore your faith, spirituality and beliefs, or take time out.

The Students’ Union also has a prayer and reflection room on the first floor of the building, on Preston Campus.

SafeZone App

A reminder to all students that you are able to access and download safety app, SafeZone.

The app provides many safety benefits, whether you’re working late, walking to your car at night, or have seen something that makes you feel uncomfortable. You can report incidents, or set a ‘check-in’ timer if you feel unsafe – and if you don’t respond when the time runs out, security will contact you. You can find out more on the Student Hub.

Please continue to look out for each other — we’re here as your Students’ Union to support our community through this difficult time.
