The end of November marks UK Disability History Month, running between the 20th of November to the 20th of December, and aims to promote and celebrate the historical contributions of the disabled community - This year’s theme, ‘Disability, Life and Death.’
The topic aims to raise awareness about the Assisted Suicide legislation which is being discussed in the houses of Parliament. You can find out more about their work and this year's theme here. The disabled community has hit back against the bill, suggesting the act will pressure vulnerable people into feeling like a burden in society. Other arguments suggest the government should turn their focus to improving palliative care.
Now entering its 15th year, Disability History Month is an excellent opportunity to reflect on the struggle for societal change and equality that disabled people face. It’s also a chance to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the community. Previous themes have included disability in culture and media, hate crime and well-being.
The month is a familiar event at the University of Lancashire. With 19% of people in the county living with disability, our support for it in previous years have helped to raise awareness on campus.
We are passionate about making sure education is accessible for all at the university, which is why the University offer Disability and Inclusive Support.
Students with a disability are able to complete an online disclosure form for support which can lead to you getting allocated an Inclusive Support adviser or officer, who will work with you and your course team to put in place support you may need, including but not limited to extra time in exams, accessible accommodation and mobility assistance.
