Student Petitions

Change only happens when people come together and act.

Start organising. Start a Petition. Start creating change.

The student community is more than 24,500 strong. Your voices can influence decisions, improve student life, and create positive change to student life and experience within the Union, University and community.

A petition is a way to bring people together around shared issues, demonstrate support, and build the collective power needed to make a difference.

To submit a petition, you need to be logged into our website (login with your usual University details) and complete the information needed. When logged into the website and on this page, the submission button will appear.

Once you have submitted, your petition will be reviewed and we'll check that your petition:

  • Doesn't duplicate existing Students' Union policy or active campaigns already working towards the same outcome.
  • Relates to issues that affect students and falls within the Students' Union's purpose and charitable objectives.
  • Is lawful and complies with relevant regulations and policies.
  • Doesn't contain discriminatory, abusive, defamatory or offensive content.
  • Doesn't create an unacceptable risk to the safety, wellbeing or rights of individuals or groups.

Once your petition is approved, it will be live on our website for 28 days. You can share with other students encouraging them to participate - they can up vote or down vote, as well as share thoughts and discuss in the comments.

The Students' Union will also include information and links to live petitions on our communication channels.

A petition will not move forward if they do not receive a minimum threshold of 50 votes or have a majority against the proposal.

After a petition closes and has surpassed the minimum threshold, it will be shared with Students’ Council to decide on the next steps which could include; taking emergency action, submitting to a Students’ Assembly or taking to an existing community.

Got a question or want to talk your petition through before submitting? Get in touch with the Students' Union Representatives at SURepTeam@lancashire.ac.uk.

If you have trouble being able to login or access the petitions, please email scommunications@lancashire.ac.uk.

    The DUA and University Communication

    Current

      Hi everyone!

Recently I found out that the University has been chosen as a founding member of the Defence University Alliance (DUA), and so will be involved with Government defence developments. I won’t explain what the initiative is, as this isn’t what the petition is about, but please feel free to research about it.

The petition reason is to do with the lack of communication between the university and the students. While I do not like the initiative personally, and am not happy about our involvement, I’m not making this post to be negative about it - instead I wanted to bring to attention the issues of communication and transparency that have been highlighted between the university and students with this subject. I am aware some people will agree with the alliance and feel it is a good step forward, but I am concerned about other agreements being made without student input or knowledge in the future.

Please use this form to let me, the SU and others involved with the university your opinions on the matter! I feel students should be given a say in their university, especially any alliances that can be deemed to be quite political in nature, but I would love to hear others opinions as well.

5:46pm on 3 Aug 26 Personally it makes me feel quite ashamed to be associated with this. I agree the university should communicate such decisions with students & be open for feedback - students should absolutely be able to have a say in such matters rather than it being kept under wraps.

8:44am on 4 Aug 26 Totally agree with you on this - transparent communication between the university and its students helps better connect the two and gain a sense of pride. Due to the cause behind it being so current in the media and the quantity of conversations (both in politics and mundane) surrounding it, this is definitely something that the university ought to have highlighted to its students prior to the decision being made. This does put mine, and many people’s pride of their university into question, what a let down.
