At Lancashire Students’ Union, community organising is how we create change. Rather than solving problems for students, community organising brings people together, develops leaders, and builds collective power so that students can identify issues, take action, and win change themselves.
Delivered in partnership with Citizens UK, this session provides an introduction to the principles and practices of community organising and how they can be applied in a student context. Whether you're representing an academic community, a liberation group, a society or a course, you'll learn practical tools for building relationships, understanding what matters to students, identifying shared concerns, and turning those concerns into effective action.
Through discussion and practical examples, we'll explore how community organising differs from traditional representation, why people power matters, and how student leaders can use organising techniques to build stronger communities and achieve meaningful change.
By the end of the session, you'll have a foundation in community organising and a toolkit of approaches that you can immediately apply within your own leadership role.
